Signs You Have a Cockroach Infestation in Your Las Vegas Home

Cockroaches are nocturnal and spend most of their time hidden in tight, dark spaces. By the time a homeowner sees a live roach walking across a counter or floor, the infestation is usually further along than it appears. Learning to recognize the early signs of cockroach activity allows homeowners to act before the population grows into a much larger and more difficult problem. If any of the signs below are present in your home, Prime Pest Control’s cockroach treatment can identify the species, locate harborage areas, and begin targeted elimination.

Droppings

Cockroach droppings are one of the earliest and most reliable indicators of an infestation. The size and appearance of the droppings depend on the species. German cockroach droppings are small and dark, resembling ground pepper or coffee grounds. They are most commonly found in kitchen drawers, under sinks, inside cabinet corners, along the tops of door frames, and behind appliances. American cockroach droppings are larger, roughly cylindrical, and may have ridged edges. These are more often found in garages, utility rooms, basements, and near floor drains.

Finding droppings in multiple locations usually indicates that the roaches have been active for some time and that the population is established enough to be foraging across several areas of the home.

Egg Cases

Cockroach egg cases, called oothecae, are small, capsule-shaped structures that each contain multiple eggs. German cockroach oothecae are light brown and about 1/4 inch long, and a single case can hold 30 to 40 eggs. Finding even one egg case means there is a breeding population in the home. Look for them in hidden areas—behind the refrigerator, inside cabinet hinges, in drawer tracks, behind outlet covers, and in the gap between countertops and walls.

American cockroach oothecae are darker, slightly larger, and are often deposited in sheltered, damp areas like basements, crawl spaces, and utility rooms.

Musty Odor

A cockroach infestation produces a distinct musty or oily smell that becomes more noticeable as the population grows. This odor comes from pheromones the roaches secrete, combined with droppings and decomposing individuals. In smaller infestations, the odor may only be noticeable when opening a cabinet or pulling out an appliance. In larger infestations, it can be present throughout the kitchen or bathroom.

If you notice an unfamiliar musty smell concentrated around the kitchen, under the bathroom sink, or near plumbing areas, cockroach activity is worth investigating as a potential source.

Seeing Roaches During the Day

Cockroaches are active at night and prefer to stay hidden during daylight hours. If you are seeing roaches during the day—especially German cockroaches in the kitchen or bathroom—it often means the population has grown large enough that competition for harborage space is pushing some individuals out of their preferred hiding spots. Daytime sightings are generally a sign of a more advanced infestation that requires prompt treatment.

Shed Skins

Cockroaches molt multiple times as they grow from nymph to adult. Each molt leaves behind a translucent shell that roughly matches the shape and size of the roach. Finding these shed skins in drawers, behind appliances, or under sinks confirms that cockroaches are not just passing through—they are living and developing inside the home.

Smear Marks

In areas with moisture, cockroaches leave dark, irregular smear marks along the surfaces where they travel. These marks are most visible on light-colored walls, along baseboards, and on countertops near sinks and drains. They are caused by the roach’s body oil and waste as it moves between hiding spots and food or water sources.

What to Do When You See These Signs

If one or more of these signs are present, the infestation is active and will continue to grow without treatment. Cockroaches—German cockroaches in particular—reproduce rapidly, and a small problem can become a large one in a matter of weeks. Store-bought sprays may kill individual roaches on contact but do not reach the hidden populations where breeding is occurring.

Professional treatment identifies the species, locates the specific harborage areas in your home, and applies targeted products that reach the roaches where they are actually living. Contact Prime Pest Control to schedule an inspection and get ahead of the problem before it spreads further.
